Rats, Lice and History

by: Hans Zinsser

When Rats, Lice and History appeared in 1935, Hans Zinsser was a highly regarded Harvard biologist who had never written about historical events. Although he had published under a pseudonym, virtually all of his previous writings had dealt with infections and immunity and had appeared either in medical and scientific journals or in book format. Disease & History: Third Edition

by: Frederick F. Cartwright, Michael Biddiss
A newly revised edition of an established classic in the history of medicine.

Arising from collaboration between a doctor and a historian, Disease and History offers the general reader a wide-ranging and most accessible account of some of the ways in which disease has left its often dramatic mark on the past.

It reviews, for example, the impact made by bubonic plague and other infections upon the ancient and medieval worlds; the likely role of syphilis in the careers of Henry VIII and Ivan the Terrible; the significance of smallpox for the conquest of Mexico; and the contribution of typhus to Napoleon’s downfall and of haemophilia to the collapse of Tsarist rule in Russia.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

by: Bob Kelley

Mountin, the Communicable Disease Center was created in 1946 as the successor to Malaria Control in War Areas (MCWA), a division of the Public Health Service based in Atlanta. The new agency, CDC, was charged with monitoring and controlling malaria, typhus, and other infectious diseases nationwide. Successful in addressing a wide array of health emergencies―including polio, measles, influenza, Legionnaires’ disease, toxic shock syndrome, and the Ebola virus―one of the CDC’s crowning achievements was its role in the global eradication of smallpox.

The Most Fatal Distemper: Typhus in History

by: George Cowan
Typhus fever is known as a historical scourge in times of war, famine and population upheaval, but this is only one of four types; the other three, each carried by a different insect, are still important causes of human disease in many parts of the world. The history of each type is described, and the intriguing recent discovery that the responsible bacteria are close cousins of the mitochondria which provide energy inside every living cell on the planet is discussed.
